Nepal Telecom Authority Makes Key Decisions on UTL, Ncell, and 5G

Kathmandu. Nepal Telecommunications Authority has made various decisions including revoking United Telecom Limited (UTL)’s license and directing Ncell to submit an asset transfer plan after the expiry of its service period.

Similarly, the authority has also decided to provide 150 million rupees to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund for flood and landslide victims. 

The authority has determined that UTL’s basic telephone service license has been automatically canceled due to non-renewal within the stipulated time, and it was informed at a press conference held on Thursday that a decision has been made to recover more than 8.5022 billion rupees owed by the company as government arrears.

In addition, a decision has been made to advance the process of forming an evaluation committee to take control of UTL’s movable and immovable assets and freeze its bank accounts. 

Similarly, as Ncell Axiata’s 25-year license is set to expire on August 16, 2086, Ncell has been instructed to submit an asset transfer plan in a timely manner in accordance with the Telecommunications Service Provider’s Asset Management Regulations.

In addition, the authority has approved the RFA document to advance the bidding process for the 800 MHz band frequency, and a sub-committee has been formed under the convenership of authority member Ananta Prakash Mallik to study the suggestions received regarding the ‘Nepal’s 5G Roadmap’ and finalize it. 

Furthermore, the authority has approved an annual budget of more than 5.50 billion rupees for the current fiscal year, approved new tariff rates for various ten telecommunications and internet service providers, and decided to renew the licenses of four internet companies for five years.
