Jairzinho
Brazil v Czechoslovakia
Mexico 1970 | Group stage Estadio Azteca, Mexico City
13 days to go…
29 May, KATHMANDU: We’re counting down to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ by showcasing a golazo from the global finals each day.
Relive the Brazilian star’s magnificent solo run and finish in a memorable group stage encounter at Mexico 1970.
“I’ll never forget the Azteca,” said Brazilian great Jairzinho, known by many as ‘The Hurricane’, but after the 1970 finals in Mexico was upgraded to ‘World Cup Hurricane’.
He blew the doors open to start Brazil’s quest for a third star, bagging a brace in the Seleção’s opener against Czechoslovakia. While the first was an exhibition of control and composure, his second in the 83rd minute shook the famed Mexico City ground.
Receiving a ball just inside the Czechs’ half, the powerful forward muscled off one defender, avoided the desperate lunge of another, hesitated just long enough to give himself a bit of space with a quick dart to the right before unleashing a right-footed rocket into net.

Watch every single goal from the 1970 FIFA World Cup Mexico™.
It capped a 4-1 triumph for Brazil, which fittingly was the same scoreline in the final against Italy, giving Jairzinho seven goals in the tournament.
“The Estadio Azteca in 1970 was the stage for my greatest moment by winning the most sought-after title for Brazil – that third world title,” he told FIFA in 2024.
